Shell Service Station: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
The decision to construct the Shell Station in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was made in the 1920s, and the station has been in operation ever since the 1930s. R.H. Burton and his son Ralph erected the structure to bring notice to the Shell gas station brand when the stations were first operating all around the United States. R.H. Burton was the original owner of Shell. Ralph Burton is R.H. Burton’s son. Out of the eight buildings that were initially constructed in the region, the building resembling a shell and colored brilliant yellow and red is the only one that has survived. It can be found near the intersection of Sprauge and Peachtree streets, and it is a nationally known historic landmark that is also included on the National Register of Historic Places.
