When it comes to shopping, things can get pricey very quickly, especially when shopping for clothes. Well, there are ways to save money and find some good bargains and still get good items. From second-hand shopping – aka thrifting – to waiting for the best sales. Well, Shannon Hiramoto is one of those people who love going thrift shopping and for good reason!
Not Just A Hobby
Thrift stores are great, and we can easily spend hours on end going through racks and racks of used clothes, treasures, and other interesting stuff. The greatest part of this is that you do not need to pay a fortune for these amazing finds. There is also the fact that these objects probably come with a fascinating history! Shannon Hiramoto’s entire life changed after bringing home a garment that she thrifted.
Thrift Store Finds
Kauai local Shannon Hiramoto is fond of scouring thrift store racks for vintage muumuus. For her, this type of dress is both flattering and comfortable! “So I’m always hunting for muumuu’s, that’s my hobby, vintage ones,” she said.
An Unexpected Shopping Day
When she stumbled upon a Salvation Army in the Lihue area, she wanted nothing more than to go through the rack and look for anything that might catch her eye. She started to sift through the items there. She had no idea she was going to be floored by what she found there.
She found a dress from the rack that looked oddly familiar to her. However, she could not put a finger on where she has seen something like this before. Shannon held it up and admired the shorter length.
It Was Her Taste
She quite liked the floral pattern against the pink of the fabric. It came with a flattering V-neck and some frills. She did not know it just yet, but there was more to this muumuu than meets the eye!
Not What It Seemed
“I saw this beautiful muumuu right here, and I’m like, ooh, a mini one, because you know it’s always fun finding a shorter one,” she narrated when she spoke to a local TV station. However, she did not figure out that there was something different about this dress until she took a closer look at it.
Something On The Tag
Shannon checked the tag on the dress. It came from Liberty House, but what shocked her was the word written on the tag. It looked like it had been written using a permanent market a long time ago.
She Had To Know More
She did not hesitate after seeing the writing in permanent marker. She took the dress before anyone else found it and made a beeline for the checkout counter. She had to know more about this dress.
A Message For Her
She had a hunch that the writing on the dress tag meant something. Could this be a sign from above? Was it even possible that she would find a message written specifically for her in this thrift store?
What Could It Be?
She took another look at the tag, and her heart skipped a beat yet again. She closed her eyes and tried to remember. Where could she have seen this before in her life? She needed to know.
In Her Mind
Things came back to her slowly after she shut her eyes tight. She saw a lady full of love for life and a strong spirit in a vibrant pink dress. In her mind, the woman only smiled at Shannon knowingly.
A Time-Traveling Dress
She managed to live to be 108 years old, and she had a message for the young woman. Shannon had no idea that this dress was going to lead her on an important journey in her life.
A Mystery To Solve
Shannon already knew the truth in her heart by then. However, she had to look for proof before she decided to make a fool of herself. She did not want to assume she was right before she could gather more proof.
There was a huge family mystery here, one she needed to solve immediately. It had big implications, too. How could a single word on the label of a thrift store dress send shivers through her spine?
Shannon went home right away, her suspicions sending her in a hurry. Her mother was home, and she wanted to hear what she had to say about what she just found. Maybe they could even solve this mystery together.
Nobody Could Believe It
Her mother went as white as a sheet after Shannon showed her this dress. Her mother could only gape as she looked at Shannon and then the dress. What was written on the tag hit her so hard anyway?
What It Said
Her face showed just about every single emotion out there. She seemed elated and heartbroken at the same time! Even though Shannon did not think her mother would react this way, the older woman was shaking with incredulity.
Who Is Kamei?
The tag did not have a random word written on it, but a name. Written in permanent ink on the tag was the name “Kamei”. This was clearly the doing of the previous owner of the dress.
Shannon felt a chill run through her body when she saw her mother’s face light up in recognition. She knew that not many people had the same name. As a matter of fact, she only knew one person who fit the description.
Her mother listened to the story she had to tell. After finally recovering, she looked at the dress carefully and nodded in agreement. It seems like Shannon was on the right track with her theories about this dress.
After this, her mother took out their family photo albums! The two of them started to go through the photos there one by one. Shannon waited with bated breath as they flipped through the pages.
Going Through Photos
It might seem like an odd place to start, although they felt sure that they would turn up some answers among the old photos. However, they lost hope when they reached the last of the albums without learning anything.
Couldn’t Figure It Out
Shannon felt sad as she was not even close to solving this mystery at all. How was she going to know if her hunch was correct? She began to feel defeated, however, her mother continued her search…
About To Give Up
Shannon thought that it might be time to give up on what she had in mind. It took her a whole day to go through the photo albums, but they did find anything after going through all that effort.
A Far-Fetched Idea
She knew that it was quite far-fetched. However, she expected to see something that was going to prove that she was right. Her mother told her something that made her heart jump into her throat.
At Long Last
A couple of days after she brought home the lovely pink muumuu, Shannon received a text from her mom. “And it’s this, and it’s her. It’s a full-body shot and I was just so excited! My mom said it was the last photo in the last album she looked at.”
Shannon now had her suspicions confirmed. She turned out to be right when she thought that the muumuu in question actually belonged to her great grandmother. She nearly fainted when she found out the news. What were the odds of such a thing happening?
Her Great Grandmother
“But it also had the handwritten word Kamei on it and it blew my mind because that’s my great grandmother’s name. Her last name,” Shannon narrated. Her great grandmother’s full name was Florence Shizuko Kamei.
Was It A Coincidence?
Her great grandmother was born in Kekaha in 1904. It was incredible that her dress ended up in the hands of her great granddaughter! What an amazing coincidence it was, for sure. Or maybe it wasn’t such a coincidence after all; maybe it was meant to be.
Advice To Live By
Shannon revealed a fact about her great grandmother, “One of her legacies is that when she passed she was the oldest person in Hawaii at age 108! When she died they announced it on the radio and news!”
What’s The Secret?
She still remembers when her great-grandma talked about her hidden secret to living such a long and accomplished happy life. As it always goes, it turns out that the secret was not so complicated at all…
She recalls what her grandmother told her: “Green tea and hobbies.” However, the other members of the family remembered more about this fascinating woman. She loved wearing flowy dresses and always had a smile on her lips.
She Was Lovely
She had been one truly happy woman! Aside from that, she was a dedicated member of the church choir and she played the ukulele. She was passionate about great food, dancing, and living her life!
An Inspiration To Her
Great grandmother Kamei had been a huge inspiration for Shannon. In fact, she decided to give her daughter the middle name Kamei because of her late relative! What did the beloved name really mean anyway?
Apparently, it means “Quiet child” in the Japanese language. However, her daughter and her great grandmother did not have quiet personalities. Her grandmother was quiet and polite, lovely and soft-spoken. Her daughter was your typical young child and loved to run around and laugh.
An Uncertain Memory
For a couple of days, Shannon racked her memory for the particular dress. She thinks that she had seen Kamei wear this before, but she admitted, “It seemed familiar, but in this memory way.” To this day, she was not a hundred percent sure if this was a real memory or if she only wanted it to be one.
The Background In The Photo
“I just knew that she [her great-grand mother] always liked to wear muumuu that had pink or purple or red,” she recalled. It is amazing that she also knows where the photo of her great grandmother was shot. It sounded perfect that the last photo in the last album ended up becoming her final resting place.
More Than Words
It sounded perfect that the last photo in the last album ended up becoming her final resting place. Finding this dress was something that meant something more than words to Shannon. She couldn’t believe something like this happened to her.
Her great grandmother struck a pose in the muumuu at a historic community of Hanapepe in Kuai. She smiled widely right in front of the United Church of Christ, her church. “What’s really special about it is she’s there,” explained Shannon. “Her ashes, her remains are in the back of the church there, so it was like visiting her again.”
Shannon wanted to honor the memory of her great grandmother by paying the church a visit. After all, it was a huge part of Kamei’s life in the past. She decided to don the muumuu that brought things full circle.
Can’t Wrap Her Mind Around This
Don’t you think it was mind-blowing that this dress ended up with the muumuu-loving great-granddaughter? Shannon couldn’t believe the chances of this happening, but she was so thankful that it did. She was definitely at the right place at the right time.
Kamei passed away five years by the time that Shannon discovered the dress at the secondhand store. “She passed five years ago, so, I have no idea where it had been between that point and now,” she said. But just what did she feel about finding this dress after such a long time? “It’s magic!” she said.
A Message From Beyond
Shannon strongly believes that it was not a mere coincidence that she found this muumuu at that thrift store. She believes that it was the older woman’s way of sending her a message from where she was now. She said, “I think it’s just her way of telling me I’m on the right track.”
Paying Homage To Her
“I’ve come full circle and feel like she is smiling down on me or at least giggling,” admitted Shannon. She has also decided that this dress was going to live on in the family as an heirloom.
This was a great way to ensure that the memory of Kamei would not disappear no matter how far along the line they were. While there any treasures to be found at thrift stores, nothing can compare to what Shannon found there!
