Gloria was trying to cancel the utilities of her late father, but the process turned out to be more frustrating than she thought. The response of the utility company only made her angry. A clerical error made everything even harder, so she decided to take matters into her own hand. In the end, she regretted her actions. However, we are sure that the company survivor would never forget this.
They Had A Special Bond
Growing up, Gloria had been very close to her dad. Despite this, the two of them drifted apart after her parents got a divorce. She was unable to visit him as often as she wanted, so it felt like she did not experience a lot of important father-daughter moments. When he passed away, Gloria had no idea just how much it was going to affect her.
Taken Too Soon
What makes it even worse was that he died on Father’s Day of 2012. Gloria was devastated and could barely function. With the help of her family and friends, she moved on with her life. Even so, this dark moment in life came with a number of stories. She would prefer it if she could just forget about them!
A Strong And Independent Woman
Even though Gloria already graduated from college and living away from her parents, the news of her father’s death devastated her. She was unable to think clearly during this period of time in her life. Not just that, but she felt angry and lashed out at her loved ones. She would always be consumed by guilt afterward.
Time To Pick Up The Pieces
Her mother came with her to attend the funeral. It was a good thing that the older woman was there to give Gloria some moral support. However, the funeral was not the end of this ordeal for her just yet. If she had to move on, she had to take care of her dad’s affairs first. She had to take care of his house.
Her Responsibility And No One Else’s
Gloria found it hard to take care of his home. She did not get any help as she dealt with small tasks. Among other things, she had to bring his furniture to storage, sell some of his things, and cancel his bills. As his daughter, she was his closest kin. This meant that no one else could shoulder this responsibility.
Canceling The Utilities For Him
One of the most harrowing experiences of the aftermath of her father’s death was canceling the utilities in his home. It should have been simple enough to inform the company providing services that he had passed away and to get a new contract under her own name, but this proved to be too difficult for everyone Gloria got into contact with.
They Wanted A Certified Death Certificate
When Gloria got in touch with the utility company, she was told that they needed to verify the death of her father. In order to that, she had to show him his certified death certificate. Gloria did as they asked. However, she was made to go through a number of unnecessary hoops first!
One Department After Another
For Gloria, it was very frustrating because she did not detect any compassion coming from the person on the other end of the line. She was already going through a hard time at the moment. You can just imagine how much more difficult this made it for her. The last straw was that they made her talk to one department after another.
He Was With Her
Upon reflecting on the incident, Gloria recalled, “In trying to get the matter handled, I was passed around to so many different people that I lost count. Not one person ever really took the time to listen to what I was trying to say to them.” We can understand why she felt even more upset after all this. She could not help but wish that her dad was there to guide her through this mess.
Another Bill Arrived
Gloria already sent in the death certificate that they requested, but a utility bill in his name still came! She assumed that she already closed this chapter of her life and that she could move on. However, the letter in the mail meant that she needed to call them again. It meant spending hours on end trying to resolve the situation.
Too Much For Her
The bill started to add up as well! Gloria did not expect that her dad was going to die at such a young age. There was no way for her to pay these bills on top of her own. She wanted to move into his home after moving out of her place. This convenience was not only annoying, but it might also do a number on her savings.
Not A Clerical Error
As Gloria went over the paperwork, she realized that it did not take into consideration that her father was dead. Clearly, they had forgotten about all the paperwork that she sent to them. It made the mourning process more difficult for her. On top of that, she no longer trusted the utility company!
More Phone Tag
There was nothing worse than the fact that all the employees she talked to merely recited a script to her. It did not even seem like the agents were humans! Gloria recounted her experience by explaining, “Not one person said ‘Oh. Wait. He’s dead? I understand. Let me get this to the correct department.’ They just kept on insisting on speaking with the account holder.”
Looking For The Account Holder
Gloria decided that enough was enough. She was going to lose it if she had to talk to another employee about the situation. After doing her best to be calm and keep her cool, she decided that it was time to do something that would get them to pay attention to her case.
He Was Not Present
The utility company kept asking to talk to the account holder. Gloria needed to repeatedly tell them that he was no longer around. However, she decided that it was time for her to change her tactic. When they next said this, she said, “Sure! Let’s set up an appointment.” She was fed up with this and decided that it was time to give them exactly what they wanted.
Setting An Appointment
Gloria prepared to drop by the offices of the utility company. She made sure that she had her dad with her! But how on earth did she plan to this? The death certificate copy was not the only thing that she took with her. She made sure to bring the urn with his ashes as well!
Where Is Her Father?
When she arrived at the offices, she met the woman that she talked to on the phone. Once again, Gloria had to explain the situation. “I need to call my supervisor,” the employee replied. Gloria hoped that the supervisor was going to be the last person she needed to talk to. Otherwise, she would have to use drastic measures.
Calling Her Supervisor
The supervisor got there and had to find out the situation. For what seemed like the hundredth time, Gloria recounted what happened. The person behind the desk wanted to see a copy of the death certificate so that they could finally close the account. It looked like this ordeal was finally about to come to an end… or was it?
The Death Certificate
Sadly, it was not the end just yet. Gloria decided that desperate times call for desperate measures! The supervisor told her that the copy had to be notarized, which meant that she needed to return. We can see why she was so frustrated. The only thing for her to do was to introduce her dad to them!
She Introduced Them
Gloria fetched a plastic bag from the urn. She then told the employees, “Okay, when you talk to him, let him know that I loved him.” The women were both speechless, but they looked horrified by what she just did. Despite this, Gloria did not regret what she did. Later on, she explained, “My dad was right there with me in spirit and would have approved of using his ashes to fight back.”
An Unexpected Turn Of Events
When Gloria talked about it, later on, she said, “I knew that it would be shocking to her to see his ashes. I knew that she would finally shut up and listen. I hoped that after someone stood up to her and put her in her place, she would change her ways and hopefully treat the next person better.”
They Called The Police
After she put the remains of her father on the desk, the cops came over. The supervisor told them that Gloria assaulted them. The authorities went to the scene and found the bag of ashes on top of the desk. They spoke to Gloria, who relayed what she just did to them in a calm manner. In the end, they felt bad for her!
She Did Not Break Any Laws
The police stepped out with the supervisor and her boss for questioning. This gave Gloria the time and space to think about what she just did. The authorities told her that she should not have human remains with her in public but said that she did not break any laws. Gloria knew that what she did was extreme, but she was just very frustrated with the situation. They demanded so much from her, so she wanted to settle it once and for all.
Not Over Yet
There is more to the story! A couple of months after this incident, she needed to have utilities installed in the house. She was ready to move into her father’s place. When she gave her name and address to the representative, Gloria was put on hold and then connected to a different department. Did they not learn their lesson after everything?
They Waived Her Fees
When she was transferred to a different representative, she was shown some kindness at last! The employee waived the extra fees associated with the installation of a new account. This person also relayed more important information to Gloria. It turned out that the supervisor who handled the case got fired. You know what they say: revenge is a dish best served cold!
