Celine and Rene began dating when she was 19 years old. That’s not at all a bad age to date, though the 26-year age gap between them definitely complicated things. They might have a wonderful relationship, though they were aware people would not approve. They turned out to be right on that account, though it did not tear them apart. In fact, they went on to get married and start a family together.

Celine actually kept the relationship a secret for more than 5 years! In an interview in 1994, Rene said he feared what the public would have to say about it. It was apparently Celine who wanted to make it public. She simply did not care if other people were going to judge them. She stated, “When you’re in love, you want to scream it to the world.”
