Alan Rickman may have done a stellar job as the Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1991 Robin Hood film, but he initially didn’t want to take on the role of the vile sheriff. As a matter of fact, he even turned down the role twice! However, the people working on the movie knew they needed the actor for the role and were set on getting him on board, so they took another approach. They basically told him he had creative control over his character and that changed his mind. It’s a good thing they thought of offering him that because Rickman’s performance made the movie.

J.K. Rowling admitted that even before her book series became a worldwide phenomenon, she wrote the character of Severus Snape based off of the past roles that Rickman had done. However, the studio’s first choice to play the role was Tim Roth, and she agreed to this. Thankfully, Roth turned down the role and opted to play a chimp in the 2001 film Planet of the Apes by Tim Burton. Rickman ended up taking on the role and nailing the part. Today, it’s impossible to imagine anybody else playing Snape.
