He had acted in theater and television before, but Die Hard was actually Alan Rickman’s first feature film. This is quite interesting considering he stole the show. Actor Sam Neill was, in fact, approached first for the role of Hans Gruber but he turned down the offer, so the crew needed to think of a different strategy to cast their villain. The casting director watched Dangerous Liaisons on Broadway in the spring of 1987, saw Rickman’s take on the reprehensible Valmon, and knew the actor was perfect for Hans Gruber. Rickman’s performance in Die Hard is pretty awesome, and you definitely cannot tell it was his big screen debut.
