Automatic Emergency Braking: This insane feature is already in most cars sold today, and by 2022, every car produced will include automatic emergency braking. Sensors in the front and back of a vehicle are able to detect if a car crash is imminent. If the sensors indeed deem the probability of an accident high, the emergency braking system will engage. Although this feature can’t stop every collision from occurring, it can definitely lessen the damage and severity of a crash. The automotive industry is very excited about this feature; the increased safety it entails is incredible.
Head-Up Displays: Drivers face so many distractions while behind the wheel- Head-Up Displays can limit them. Glancing down at the speedometer for even a split second is extremely dangerous. This new display projects the car’s navigation system and speedometer in the driver’s line of sight. This technology is in new cars and a portable device can be purchased for older vehicles.
Exit Warning Systems: Most major cities in the United States now have bike lanes, not only great for the environment, but also for your wallet. The only downside is the increased bike and car collisions. Drivers have the most trouble when pulling out of or into parallel parking spots (the most common type of parking in cities). Audi and Hyundai have manufactured a system that warns passengers, locks the doors and flashes lights if the sensors detect someone behind or to the side of the car. This will not only decrease the cyclist-car accident rate but also cars backing into other cars and pedestrians.
